I've blown up gates with 5 grenades, 4 placed in the ground and i drop and run for the 5th. However it's not every time. I've gone through 8 before and not even made a dent.

The fence length is fixed. The only way to fix the hole would be to use a barricade. Build another fence next to the gap,with the middle of the new panel straddling the gap. Base building by barricading should be as realistic as poss IMO. It should be easy as hell to get into player structures. Theres nothing you can do to a building (authenticly) that will keep people out.
