It's easy to get comfy. DayZ is the most adrenaline filled, exciting, just insane game to play, for about 15 seconds out of every 2 hours on average. It's keeping on your toes those 2 hours that keeps you alive after that first gunshot rings out. Also, playing with friends adds a false sense of security.

Items despawning means a typo in typs.xml or yoy didn't add bbp items to it or some bbp setting. Not only the official servers should be affected, modded servers and Namalsk are also affected by the wipe. How often do official servers wipe DayZ? I asked the same thing yesterday, in game, apparently the scuttlebutt is every 45 to 50 days one server is taken down for optimisation which basically removes all persistent items.

It seems your best bet is to play on official servers. They almost never wipe, whereas most if not all community servers are wiped at least with every major update. I mean, a wipe every 3 months is quite infrequent for a community server, you'd probably be hard-pressed to find one that stays up for longer periods.I’ve finally gotten good at official and really starting to enjoy it.
