Kotor 1 got the ball rolling even though I’d consider it the more traditional SW story of the 2, while Kotor 2 takes this idea and creates the character of Kreia who quite literally sees the conflict between both sides as never ending and pointless. The analysis also revealed something I missed about Kreia entirely.
The KOTOR as a whole is not canon, even with the remake. This is mentioned on the announcement article on the Star Wars website. But as mentioned, there are parts of the Old Republic that are canon, like Darth Bane, the existence of a Darth Revan, HK droids, etc... You can consider all Legends content "canon until contradicted".It's very easy to get the dark side ending by siding with the wrong person on Onderon. The Ebon Hawk always falls into depths of Malachor, IIRC. That doesn't have to do with whether you're LS or DS.
