Using the scroll-wheel allows you to widen or narrow the scanning circle. For me it was a great tool during Xenothreat.

Yes and no. No: Asteroid mining has a bug where some rocks cannot be scanned. Yes: Go mine on Lyria, and don't waste your time in Aaron Halo/others. Lyria has bigger and better rocks.
