The layout of the Majestic resorts are all similar but since the Mirage is new, the vegetation is not as grown in as over at the Elegance. But the rooms at the Mirage are much bigger than at the Elegance (nearly 1000 sq feet. Most are 2 room suites or rooms with an outdoor area on the roof)
I assume you are looking at the Colonial Club section. Cause it would also have a private beach area for Club members. Have been to the Majestic Elegance and Bavaro Princess. Both are great resorts but we are returning to the Majestic for trip #5 this winter. BP is a large resort - need a tram to get to the front lobby area most of the time. The Splash is located behind the Royalton Punta Cana. A shuttle is provided to bring you to the beach area. The Elegance is slightly more elegant but the Colonial has more of a family vibe. They are next to each other, so the beach is the same. Both are lush and tropical as well as compact.
The food at the two is comparable. At times Excellence might be a little better, but Elegance has more variety and choices. Night life we found really boring at Ex. , and quite enjoyable at Majestic. I don't know where you got the idea that ME is more "crowded", unless you are talking about the beach.
