I believe it is a Model 39A first model, except I can find nothing to validate the serial number and also, in all the pictures I have looked at, checking on the forend and butt stock grip. The last patent date on the barrel is March 1, 1892.

You are correct about the vintage of your Marlin Model 39-A. It is a 1968 production gun. There is a thread somewhere on here that gives about all the serial number information if you want to do a "SEARCH" for it. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. It did say Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven, Conn in italics on the barrel and it does say MARLIN GOLDEN 39A in caps. I know "golden" means its not old old. But it only had a 4 digit serial number located under the lever handle on the bottom tang, 3367. Mine says No. 064xx on the top tang. With the large number made they were in the catalog for several years.
