Posted May 28, 2013. I like the Pardner better. It is an 870 clone with a better heavier receiver and beefier parts. The Maverick's are fine guns, but are a cheaper versions of the budget 500. They also loose the benefit of the Mossberg over the 870's in that they use a cross bolt safety instead of the tang safety.

There is a price difference, but the choice you must make is whether you prefer the safety on the trigger group (model 88) like the 870 Remington or on the tang (model 500) and be willing to pay about $100 more for the 500. As to the 88 being a "cheapie", Mossberg doesn't advertise this, but they offer no barrel replacements for the 88.If you laid out the parts to a new Mossberg 500 and a new Mav 88, the differences you would see are minimal. 1. the receiver has different mill work/roll marks on it. 2. the trigger group is different (Mav 88 is cross bolt safety, Moss 500 is tang safety) 3. the forearm tube "may" be of different length.
