I know of two sold in this area within the last two years with 8,000 to 12,000 bales that brought exactly $10,500 each private sale. Each baler still had the original endless belts. A worn out 644 will be just that, a worn out round baler. A 644 Auto Wrap Silage Special can be a good twine only silage baler.

Have heard good things about both the New Holland and the Vermeer round balers for silage. swmnhay is one of the vermeer experts. I used a new BR7060 New Holland silage special last spring. Not mine, belonged to a friend and it work very well, no problems.It is possible when continuing to feed hay after the auto wrap trips for the twine to be pushed over the knife cross rod instead of going to the bottom of the bale. The twine can still start, but won’t cut. You need a new gauge. be sure when you get the gauge to also get the large washer to fit over the gauge. The new gauge is smaller.It needed two new rollers and all new belts so I had the local NH shop do the work. Way better than the old 848. Cheers. 644 and 648 are functionally the same. 644 was older model same 4x5 baler mine was bought new in 1996 when I traded it in 2014 got 12500 in trade paid 19500 new in 1996. Only use the black New Holland net wrap with these balers the white stretch wrap caused too many problems.
The 1/4" round bars will end the problem with the hay spitting out the top for good. Just don't ever "slam" it in after you do that in long stringy hay.. We have a problem with the slip clutch on the top of the baler. It takes out the bushings and then starts to slip while making a bale. We added an extra zerk to try to lube the bushings better, but still have problem. We are now going to rebuild the shaft as that is wearing down. Several neighbors have the same problem.
