You can get a lot farther than the 168 blocks (84 each way) if you want. Mine was something like 110 each way. There's a min and a max, and the max is pretty far. Also fun, You can spawn the portals 5 blocks bellow the stand causing all the boring minions to be unable to reach the crystal at all. 1.
