The work life balance even as an attending surgeon is not going to be as good as an attending anesthesiologist. The hours are still longer and is demanding. I wouldn't put too much thought into the years required for residency. Even in anesthesia, you'll need intern year plus CA1-3.Combined IM/anesthesia is a dumb idea and a waste of time. It may improve your knowledge, but it does not improve your chances of getting a job. It is impractical. You will end up practicing one or the other. If you try to be both a PCP and an anesthesiologist, you will just end up being mediocre at both.

Didn't cram with them but read them both in the month or so leading up to the exam. Solidified the knowledge.Pros: Anesthesiology is a very procedure oriented specialty. You do a variety of procedures and you do a lot of them and you become the person that can be depended upon to perform under pressure.
