Well, I don’t follow ‘meta’ or ‘must have best army’ stuff. I love to follow a more realistic setup. So a good amount of diverse infantry with shield bearers up front. (2/3 - 1 legionary to mennavliaton) Several full rows of archers behind that and about a 1/4 total cavalry.

The khans are best at open field, but a well placed slope defense with the foot army can just wipe the floor with anyone. It's more finicky, but it's also better for sieges as khans guards don't carry shields.I had the best results with Imperial Legionaries. Their armor is superb, they have a large shield, they have javelins and they are easy to recruit. EDIT: I forgot to mention that they are similarly armed and decently armored at almost every level of their troop tree so they form consistent infantry even if many are underleveled. 15.What makes it so good though is that you can rapidly capture cities and castles without worrying about rebellions. There's about x3 Empire cities compared to all other cultures.
