My real answer is that between 1e archetypes and multiclassing, you could do almost anything, but poorly. 2e allows you to really not suck when doing wild stuff. My current favorite builds are the sterling dynamo monk, and the rippling water stance monk with a witch dedication to get the elemental betrayal focus spell.

This class doesn't need that at all, and should really use strength or dexterity like a fighter. It's to differ from those based on strength, con, int or cha.
